    Recon Finds his Forever Family

Posted on February 27, 2014 by in updates

Good news! It was love at first sight for all of them — Jed, Anna and Recon. The three met for the first time on Monday at Liberty Station, just a meet and greet with no expectations. Jed and Recon just clicked and the canine walked by the tall, former Marine’s side, glancing up occasionally just […]

    Happy Trails

Posted on February 13, 2014 by in Autism Service Dogs, New Puppy-in-Training, Service Dog Training, Service Dogs, updates

Happy Trails The hardest service dog skill for Dancer is ignoring other dogs when she’s trail-walking with her boy or training-trail-walking with me. But after much trial and error, I think I’ve found the right way to keep her focused on my command to “leave it” when another dog walks by. The trick is in […]

    Punky at Work

Posted on February 3, 2014 by in Therapy Dogs

Love Heels-trained therapy dog Punky (with her “dad” Preston) brightened the day for a patient at the Veterans Hospital in La Jolla last week.  If a patient desires to pet her, she hops atop their bed and patiently sits as they interact with her.  Punky visits veterans there every other week.

  • No Visits to Nazareth House Next Week!

Posted on January 24, 2014 by in updates

Nazareth House is on a “lock down” of sorts because of an outbreak of Norovirus, a nasty stomach bug that is especially hard on older people.  We won’t be training or visiting until the outbreak is over. We will let you know when we’ve got the all clear to come back. Here’s a letter from Nazareth […]

    Go Punky!

Posted on January 23, 2014 by in Therapy Dog Training, Therapy Dogs

On Tuesday, we found pint-sized Punky, a Love Heels therapy dog, alongside her trainer Preston Turegano in a wheelchair around touring the halls of Nazareth House. The team was working on a key skill for a therapy dog like Punky, who visits residents of care facilities like Nazareth House and the VA Hospital: acclimating to […]

    Siblings of a Different Species

Posted on January 12, 2014 by in Autism Service Dogs, Service Dogs

Every time Zander hang out on Dancer’s new “dog bed” and every time Dancer walks over her new “dog bed” to hang out on Zander’s mini-trampoline, I am reminded that Zander and Dancer are a lot like siblings:   They covet (and command) each other’s toys. They sometimes tussle over toy (with Dancer usually giving […]

  • Let Them Eat … Grass

Posted on December 22, 2013 by in updates

With the holiday season upon us, it’s not unusual for us to be concerned about our dogs eating something they shouldn’t (a sugar cookie or even a sugar plum, perhaps). So it’s also not usual for us to worry that when our dogs eat grass, they are showing us that something has gone wrong with […]

    Phoebe Meets (and Eats) Snow!

Posted on December 14, 2013 by in Autism Service Dogs, New Puppy-in-Training, updates

Love Heels puppy extraordinaire Phoebe and her boy Nick checked out the snow at SeaWorld recently with mom Michelle.               Nick loved the snow, but Phoebe would rather eat it than touch it.  She would go only as far as the edge of the snow. The snow was cold […]
